Biographical Facts

* Patricia Ann Barber was born in Lansing, Michigan on July 11, 1944



* her mom's family was Irish and her father's family was Russian and Jewish



*she lived on her grandparent's farm in Union City, Michigan until the age of five - "living on that little farm with them was the most magical time of my life...this is the place where I heard such wonderful stories told."



* she moved to Coral Gables, Florida and then on to Oakland ,California with her mom at age eight - she lived there for almost thirty-seven years - "all of my neighbors came in as many colors, ideas, and religions, as there are people on the planet"



*she has a big brother named Richard



* she met her best friend, Stewart Grinell Washington in California - "we are best friends to this day"



*Patricia did not learn to read until she was almost fourteen years old - "I wasn't a very good student. I had a terrible time with reading and math. I thought I was dumb. I didn't like school because there was this boy that always teased me and made me feel even dumber."



*she was diagnosed with dyslexia - "One of my heroes, my teacher, found out what was wrong with me and got me the help that I needed to succeed in school."



* Patricia went on to attend Ohio State University, where she earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Fine Arts and a Doctorate in Art History.



*she has two children, Steven and Traci and now lives in Union City, Michigan



*Patricia did not start writing children's books until the age of forty-one - "When you are raised on HEARING stories...NOT SEEING THEM, you become very good at telling stories yourself."
